Its now essential to be active in social media to advance your career

This quote came up the other day while I was on twitter. I do often wonder if it is essential these days to be in social media. I don’t doubt this statement at all. I have read and seen people reject candidates because they couldn’t find any social media presence.

I wonder though is this the best way to hire people?  Are companies missing out on talented candidates?

There are lots of reasons not to be involved in social media, privacy being the big one. Some people are fired for not thinking before they tweet.

In any case it looks like in the future you will have to think about your social media presence, because this is how the world is going to see you. Companies won’t change their thinking because you think talent alone will get you somewhere.
